History: The Learning Resources & Technology Services department was formed during the spring 2010 semester following the departmental restructuring exercise carried out by the management in line with the 10 year roadmap of MECIT. The department was created by grouping together two existing units, The Library & the IT Services Department, that carried out academic support functions. The IT Department was then nullified and then based on its macro functionality divided into 3 units namely, IT Support Office, Information Systems Unit and Education Technologies Unit.
The IT Services department had started with just the basic infrastructure to connect the computers at MECIT for the purpose of internal & external communication and necessary support for its users in 2002. As the institution grew, so did its requirements and thus the department started offering more services like file storage space, hosting services, general labs & departmental labs etc. In the year 2004, MECIT began its software development initiative with the College Information System (CIS). The initiative has come up with a handful of applications like CIS, HRIS, eTracker, ePlacement. A Learning Management System in the form of Moodle was launched in 2009 in collaboration with the Department of Computing. Over the years, the Library grew with a very rapid pace from a room with few racks of books to a state of art building, complete with facilities like Silent Study Zones, Discussion Rooms, Electronic Circulations, Online Databases, OPAC search kiosks, Wi-Fi access, Security & Access Control Gates.
Future:
Look out for trends in information and communications technology in particular learning technologies which key emphasis on mobile learning technologies, contextualize and implement them at MECIT.
Further equip the library to continuously promote a culture of reading and encourage the use of library as a centre for independent lifelong learning.
Since the current education trends are point towards ‘Anytime Anywhere Learning’, the department will be watching closely the buildups in Cloud Computing and align itself towards these concepts.
Develop custom applications rapidly, integrates them with existing applications as well as devices thus making technology an everyday part of each MECITian.
