Student Success Center

The Student Success Center at MECIT was setup to work with various academic departments to exercise systems that provide added support to students who are relatively weak in their academic performance, particularly of those with learning difficulties.

The Center supports and counsels students on academic, career, personal and social matters. The mission of the SSC is to enable sustained improvement in the academic performance of the students particularly those with learning difficulties, facilitate professional competence and assist clarify College policies, regulations, rules and procedures to ensure most favorable compliance.

A professional counselor is available to deal with other social and psychological issues that confront students.

Unit objectives are:

1. Design, develop and implement innovative student friendly programmes aimed at improving the academic performance of students who are lagging behind.
2. Prepare and provide supportive learning material to such students and to conduct special coaching sessions.
3. Facilitate, organize and provide tutorial support to students with learning difficulties and disabilities with the active participation of all members of the faculty.
4. Monitor student progress.
5. Intensify and strengthen Academic Advising in partnership with the Academic Advising committee.
6. Facilitate better understanding of college academic and other regulations, rules and procedures and to ensure student compliance with the same.
7. Redress student grievances as appropriate.
8. Provide career counselling and support placement initiatives.
9. Help students joining the college to settle down easily by organising a comprehensive orientation programme.
10. Conduct relevant surveys, analyze the data and act on the findings.

IT Services @ MECIT

The Learning Resources & Technology Services Department at MECIT, works in close association with the various Faculties and Departments to provide appropriate computing facilities that help students with their study. The latest versions of Microsoft word-processing, spreadsheet and various other subject specific software applications are available together with printers and scanners.

The computer labs are well-equipped with state of the art technology. Dedicated teaching Labs with seating capacity varying from 15 to 410. Additionally,Sun thin clients are available with separate account for each student.

Photocopying, printing, and file storage systems are based on separate student account. Sun system enables users to work from any desk space; upon logging on to the system users can get their last saved session. All these eliminate the need for additional memory, reference to last used machine, and support working at one’s own convenience without loss of work already completed.

In addition, we have equipped the college extensively with WIFI technology, to enable internet access from virtually all public areas of the campus.

Student Accommodation

One of the main attractions of studying at MECIT is the range of accommodation available for the students. MECIT offers accommodation in the form of Halls of Residence for our students. All the hostels are within the reach of the Campus. These halls of residence provide each student with the opportunity for living as part of the student community and for establishing friendship with peers who have varied interests and backgrounds.

There are separate Halls of Residence for male and female students. The experience of operating MECIT Halls of Residence suggests that the key to having an enjoyable time in the halls is to get to know fellow residents and the wardens and take part in the various activities that promote a community environment conducive to academic studies and positive social experience.

The Halls of Residence also have amenities such as round the clock security for the safety of students, trained wardens to handle student issues, recreation rooms, study rooms and provision for laundry and cooking, thus ensuring that the students are comfortable and safe. Additionally, students are provided with services like weekly shopping trips, provision of transport for visiting a doctor to the hospitals.

MECIT is currently in the process of developing on campus student accommodation that will be capable of accommodating 576 female students. The project is scheduled to be completed by end of year 2011.

Transportation Services

MECIT provides safe, convenient and cost effective transport service to students covering different areas across Muscat including the hostels.

Students who opt to use transportation facilities available at MECIT are picked up and dropped back at specific locations as per pre determined time schedules.

Convenient shuttle services are available throughout the day, to and from the College Hostels.

Other services

MECIT provides a dedicated Facilities Centre that caters to the requirements of the student community on campus. The facilities centre provides students with prayer halls, and common halls for male and females, refectory with all modern equipments that can house 380 students in one sitting, WIFI connectivity and comfortable dining desks help groups of students to work together even while eating.

The popular food items, and relaxed setting attract not only students and staff from MECIT but also students from neighbouring colleges, tenants and other guests visiting KOM to have their lunch at MECIT cafeteria.

An auditorium with a seating capacity of about 280 people with fully functional multimedia facilities with touch panel controls, surround sound, and ambient lighting functions, is used to host popular lectures, important events, and for activities by clubs such as the public speaking society. This facility is also used by external groups for hosting events such as poetry recitals. Ministries use the auditorium to organise workshops, seminars, and other national level events.

Wellness Centre at MECIT is situated in the ground floor of the Teaching & Learning Block with easy access to the College population. The Student Success Centre provides a personalised, caring and confidential counselling service, developed to cater for the needs of our students.
