The Languages Centre, established in 2002, is one of the major support departments of MECIT. Today the department offers the Foundation Programme to approximately 1,000 students each semester. With the objective of enabling students to achieve the desired level of proficiency in English Language, Mathematics, Computing and Study Skills, that helps them to participate fully in all aspects of post secondary and higher education programmes, the department continues to offer the best to students. Initially the MECIT Foundation programme was an adaptation of Arlington Education and Employment Programme (REEP) and City University of New York (CUNY) Foundation Programme.
In the pursuit of its mission to provide quality education to its students, the Languages Centre periodically embarks on initiatives that help refine and strengthen its curriculum. As part of ongoing curriculum development, by the end of each year, Languages Centre reviews its Foundation Programme to see if it meets the requirements of MECIT students in particular and the Omani society in general. It also takes advice of ELT experts on the programme as well as delivery methods. In April, 2006, representatives from The Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) were invited to validate the existing programme. The specific purpose of this validation by an international external was to strengthen the Foundation programme further in order to help students achieve desired levels of proficiency in the language, and also with regard to obtaining programme accreditation. The validation programme comprised two main parts. The first involved a series of classroom observations across various teaching departments, interactions with students and tutors, and consultations with the administration. The second was an ESL workshop conducted for the Languages Centre staff.
The Foundation Programme which is currently offered by MECIT has evolved from the expertise of local and international ESL professionals as well as from the experience and feedback obtained from periodic reviews, student feedback and performance. The Foundation Programme offered in the Fall 2010 semester is in complete alignment with the Oman Academic Standards for General Foundation Programmes.
The Department has been working towards enriching and strengthening the Foundation Programme as well as the other courses it offers and encourages research in the areas of ELT and ESP. Languages Centre faculty actively participate in conferences and seminars at the national and international level.
In addition to the Foundation Programme, the Languages Centre also offers credit bearing courses to undergraduate students. In the years 2004 and 2005, Advanced English was offered to UG students, while in Fall 2005, a new course called English for Specific Purposes was introduced. In Fall 2007, two new elective modules, English for Research Purposes and Job Skills, were introduced.
