The teaching staff of the Languages Centre are highly qualified, committed, enthusiastic, multi- talented ELT professionals.
Dr. Lyudmyla Kedova is the head of Languages Centre at MECIT. She holds a Ph.D in Linguistics and an MA in TESL and Linguistics. She has over 35 years of extensive teaching experience at the tertiary level.
Adil Rashid Al Tobi holds a Bachelor Degree of Education in English Language from Nizwa College of Higher Education, Oman. Prior to joining MECIT, he worked with the Ministry of Education in the Sultanate. He presented a paper on ‘Contrastive Analysis and its significance in the learning processes. He plans to pursue his Masters in Applied Linguistics. His interests include contributing stories and poems to educational websites.
Afaf Gasmi is a Faculty in Languages Centre. She holds a Bachelors Degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Letters and Human Sciences of Tunis, Tunisia. She holds a certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge. Bearing in my mind the new challenges that EFL teachers are facing, and the need to enhance one’s learning as well as teaching experience, she has enrolled to a Masters Degree Program in TESOL that is conducted in the University of Southern Queensland/Australia (on-going).
Her main areas of interest in the teaching field are Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and experimenting with new ways to improve the students’ writing skills. She has attended many national and international workshops and seminars with the purpose of broadening her work experience. She has also conducted workshops on the writing process and process writing, as well as using the YouTube for writing lessons.
Beena Kulangara has been a lecturer in English as a Foreign Language (ESL) for the past 12 years. She has a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature from Madurai Kamaraj University and a TEFL Certificate from Bangkok. At present, she is taking up a course in Business English from Bangkok and is pursuing the Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Course sponsored by MECIT. Her career goals are to enrich students with the essential skills and competencies in language learning to promote them to be successful and enterprising individuals.
Deepali Bhatnagar joined MECIT in 2009 and became part of the Languages Centre. She holds a B.Sc. (Hons) degree, a Bachelor’s degree (B.Ed.) in Education and a Master’s degree from the well-known Delhi University, India. She also has a Diploma in teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). She has many years of teaching experience. Her last position as a teacher of English at one of the prestigious Indian Schools in Muscat where she was teaching Secondary and Senior secondary classes has enriched her experience further, as a teacher of English. At MECIT, apart from teaching various modules to the Foundation level 1 and 2 students, and other modules being offered by the Languages Centre, she is the Editor-in-chief of The Dhow, the college newsletter, and holds the responsibility of bringing out new issues of the same, thrice a year. Her career goals include a sincere effort to improve the writing skills of MECIT students and to promote their understanding of the English language in order to enhance their language competency.
Dr. Radhika Lakshmi, S.N has a PhD in English Literature (from University of Madras, India). Currently, she is pursuing her Post Graduate Diploma in the teaching of English from EFLU, (through distance education) Hyderabad.
After completing her M.A and M. Phil in English Language and Literature, she joined as a full-time Research scholar at Presidency College (university of Madras), Chennai, India in 1999. She was involved in the study of British poet Brian Patten’s poetry which formed the theme of her PhD thesis. She earned her doctoral degree from University of Madras in 2003. She has had intensive and extensive exposure to prose, fiction, drama as well as English Phonetics and study of the History and development of the English Language during her M.A and M. Phil programmes (University of Madras).
She started her EFL teaching career in China in 2003 and after two years of teaching at Fuzhou Napier College (Fuzhou University, Fujian Province), she came to Oman. She has taught at Ibri College of Technology for three years before joining MECIT’s Languages Centre as Assistant Professor.

Badees Saleh Al Gharbi joined MECIT in 2009. He has brought with him more than ten years experience in teaching, ranging from elementary beginners to university post graduates. He succeeded in teaching, motivating, and directing students while maintaining high interest and achievement. He is also an articulate communicator able to interact effectively with diverse populations of students at various levels of technical ability and maintaining liaison with students, parents and teaching professionals. He devised lessons, which captured the children’s imagination for e.g.: Preparing scenes from well-known works or scenes from historical events and having the children act them out.
Miss Hazar Ayadi is a Masters degree holder in Literature and Cross Cultural Poetics with a very good distinction.
She has a college certificate from Derby University (UK) of subjects including English through the media/current affairs/British culture/language and literature/information technology. she taught in a lot of prestigious colleges in Tunisia for about 6 years, and she even taught as a Legal English instructor for ACR lawyers at Linguanet College. Furthermore, She was a teacher trainer in the region of Musandam for about 4 years. She obtained a grant from the Tunisian government for a one-month stay at Derby University in UK as a visiting student in the Department of English, in addition to an honorary certificate from the Democratic union for the efforts made in the Baccalaureate programs. She visited London, Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire Birmingham and Chesterfield. She wrote a lot of articles and comparative works, that have been appreciated by all the readers.
During the last years of her academic career, She has specialized in the following areas: Contemporary literary Theory, Poetry (Modernist, Postmodernist, Postcolonial, contemporary Arab women poets, African Verse, Caribbean, resistance poets such as Lorca, Shakespeare’s sonnets and Metaphysical Poetry, Literary trends (Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, Modernism, postmodernism), Narratology and Contemporary Narrative Theory, African American Poetry, Stylistics, Advanced reading and advanced Writing,Translation: English-French-Arabic : All types of documents and Specialties. Business, law, tourism, medicine, technical, art, literature, administrative and official documents, school and university degrees, marriage and divorce. She is determined to enroll for a doctorate degree in September 2012. (Waiting for the committee’s approval about the thesis).
Jawaher Al Zeidi has a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the College of Arts and Social Science, Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. She trained as a translator at the Public Relations and Information Department in SQU. In the University of Queensland, Australia, Jawaher completed a course on English Language and Methodology for TESOL Purposes. She also visited schools to observe various teaching methodologies. She played a leading role in organizing speaking courses in SQU while she was a student there. She is planning to pursue a Master’s degree in TESOL.
Kalpana P. McGrath joined MECIT in fall 2006. She earned her Master’s degree in English from the University of Kolkata, and attended the University of Cambridge South East Asian Programme (Bangkok) on the Teaching and Testing of English as a Foreign Language. She has taught English for more than 20 years at various levels in India, Nepal and the U.A.E. Her main interest is the teaching of reading skills and preparation of relevant learning materials.
Lara Arafat’s career as an educator started right after obtaining her bachelor’s degree in English Literature from the University of Jordan. As a language teacher, she used her repertoire of teaching skills and knowledge to motivate and guide her students to reach and achieve the expected outcomes. Her research interest is in syntax. Regarding her professional goals, she is seriously considering a Master’s degree or a Diploma in TESOL.
Liz Mundakkal Job, Faculty has more than 14 years of teaching experience. She has been imparting English language skills to undergraduate students in addition to teaching Writing for Media (Television) and Translation Studies. From 1995-2007, she was working in Christ College, India as a Senior Lecturer. A postgraduate in English Literature from the University of Calicut, she has been actively involved in student affairs and extracurricular activities. Currently, she handles most of the Foundation Programme modules as well as the English for Special Purposes module offered by the Languages Centre. She is Examination Coordinator for the Foundation Programme of the College.
Maha Abasaid graduated from the University of Jordon (English Literature major - Archeology minor) in 1991. She achieved the Diploma of African Folklore from the University of Khartoum in Sudan in 1993. She was awarded the Diploma of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) From the American University of Beirut in Lebanon in 1995. Maha completed her M.A. in Education and Applied Linguistics at the Open University (2004) in the United Kingdom.
She had worked in different educational institutes in different countries, such as the American School in Khartoum, Mid –West Development Education Center and St. Paul School of Limerick in Ireland. Her last position, for the past five years, was the English Language Instructor at the Nursing Institute in Tabuk in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. She is interested in resuming her studies in the field of Applied Linguistics and conducting a comparative study related to the methodologies used in both mainstream schools, Arabic and Quranic schools in western societies.
Majan Al-Yarubi recently joined Middle East College of Information Technology as a Demonstrator. She previously worked at the Ministry of National Economics at the Department of Quality Assurance. She worked successfully as part of a team of training consultants providing a range of educating courses to census employers. She also designed and delivered presentations on 2010 Oman Census topics. Majan has earned her Bachelor’s degree in English from Majan University College. She plans to complete her Master’s degree in Code Switching or Linguistics.
Mangala G Raj earned her Bachelors (B.A. Ed) and Masters Degrees (M.A.) at University of Mysore, India. Prior to beginning her career with MECIT, she served as English Lecturer in Oman College of Management & Technology and in College of Banking & Financial Studies. She has a total of about 20 years of extensive teaching experience. She strives to combine her academic knowledge and time tested language learning techniques to provide students with the knowledge and ability to explore their potential to the fullest in both college and at work.
Manju Redappa graduated from S.V. University, India with a Masters in English Literature and has done a TEFL course from Bangkok. She has recently completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Course offered by Coventry University, UK with a distinction. During her experience of language teaching spanning 15 years, she has conducted various workshops and presentations on acquisition of language skills at the regional and national level. Her research interests: Enhancing student learning through effective feedback strategies in the English Language classroom. She is the Placement Coordinator for the Foundation Programme.
Marwa Elshafie has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Ain Shams University in Cairo, a Master’s degree in TESOL from Khazar University in Azerbaijan and a CELTA certificate from the British Council, India . She has 5 years of teaching experience in different countries. She has taught ESL, ESP, academic writing, public speaking skills and teacher training courses. Before joining MECIT, she worked as an EFL instructor at the British Council, Oman. She has co-authored two books about Reading and General English Skills. In addition, she has an accepted paper on Gender differences at the ELT symposium organised by the Sultan Qaboos University.
Rashid Muhammad has a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Jammu and Kashmir. Before joining MECIT, he worked in the Kashmir Institute of Advanced Studies as English lecturer from 2000-2005.Mr.Rashid has also taught Linguistics, Grammar and Phonetics and Phonology to post graduate students. Mr. Rashid has been actively involved in conducting student feedback surveys for the MECIT Foundation Programme since 2007.
Ms. Priya Mathew earned her postgraduate degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Calicut and has also successfully completed the Certificate in English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA). She has taken up administrative responsibilities as Assistant Head of Department from 2009 onwards. Her achievements include being the university topper in the University of Calicut in 1993 in her Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature, passing the All India University Grants Commission Examination which entitles her for lectureship in any college or university in India. Priya presented a paper entitled ‘Content Based Instruction in ESP for IT’ at the 5th Annual CamTESOL Conference held in Cambodia in 2009. Her interest is in developing a Foundation Programme best suited to Omani students seeking enrolment in undergraduate academic programmes based on findings from applied research activities centred on students of MECIT.
Mr. Salvador Balanza Flamenia joined Language Centre, MECIT in 2005 and was a recipient of USAGIASA as both a grantee and an academic scholar at the University of the San Agustin, Iloilo City, Philippines. He obtained his MA in Education from the Philippine Normal University, Manila, Philippines and CELTA from CfBT, Oman. Being a member of British Council’s ELT Professional Network, he is also currently pursuing his Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Professional Practice at Coventry University, United Kingdom sponsored by MECIT.
His flair in writing was put into good use when he served as moderator of official newspapers of various schools and colleges where he studied and employed with including the launching of MECIT’s “The Dhow” - the first ever college newsletter as Editor-in-Chief . As coordinator of Computer Based Learning module, he has attended innovative trainings, conferences and workshops in higher education in other colleges and universities.
Mr. Flamenia has been teaching English for 17 years in the Philippines and Oman in both secondary and college levels and finds teaching a most wonderful and rewarding experience.
Ms. Samia Naqvi is an ELT professional who has a Master’s degree in English Language and Literature as well as teaching qualifications which include Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language to Adults (TEFLA). She has an overall experience of 14 years in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) to students of various backgrounds and levels. She is the coordinator of the English for Special Purposes (ESP) course. Her field of research is content based instruction in ELT. Ms. Samia has presented papers on ‘Integration of Skills and Content’ at Qatar TESOL 2009, 'Impact of 1st language Writing Orientation on the Acquisition of 2nd language' at the 39th Annual and 5th International ELTAI Conference held in India in 2008, co-authored the paper titled ‘Content Based Instruction in ESP for IT’ presented at Cam TESOL 2009 and received the Best Paper Award for the paper titled, ‘Rape of the Lock as a Mock Epic’ at Lucknow University in 1995.
Srinivas is a post graduate in English Language and Literature from Andhra Loyola College. He served as a teacher in the Ministry of Education from 1998 to 2009. He presented two papers entitled Extensive Reading: A way Forward and Handwriting: A vital Sub-skill at the National Conference of English Teachers and Supervisors conducted by Directorate of Curriculum, Qurum. Prior to this he taught undergraduates of colleges affiliated to Nagarjuna University from 1986 to 1998.
Mr. Tareq Al-Damen earned his BA and MA degrees in English Language and Translation from Yarmouk University, Jordan. In addition, he has a TEFLA Certificate from Aston University. Currently, he is working on a PhD thesis titled, 'Syntactic Avoidance as a Communication Strategy' at Malaya University, Malaysia. Before joining MECIT in 2005, he taught English as a Foreign Language in Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. He coordinates the Public Speaking Skills module.
